The Herald’s editorial highlights major progress that has been made in the Legislature to get the T back on track — as well as the work that remains to be done to avoid another winter like the last one (“More work at the T,” July 13). There’s no question that the budget sent to the governor — which created a strong fiscal management control board with the authority to competitively contract services — represented a major step forward for Massachusetts communities and businesses alike, including the 1.5 million taxpayers, commuters and residents from across the commonwealth that our coalition represents.

Now legislators need to finish the job. As the Herald pointed out, additional steps, including giving the board final approval of labor contracts, the flexibility to change the fare structure at the T and more transparency into the T Retirement Fund, are essential to ensuring these reforms make the biggest possible difference.

Lawmakers have shown that Beacon Hill is capable of making real progress when it comes to the T. Let’s give the governor the tools he needs to get the job done.
